Organization of Magnolia State Chapter, NSDAR, November 8, 1929
Mrs. Harrison B. Lightcap was first appointed by Mrs. Calvin Brown of Oxford, State Regent, to act as Organizing Regent for a new D. A. R. Chapter to be organized in Jackson. Mrs. Lightcap worked diligently and laid the permanent groundwork for an auxiliary chapter. However, due to the illness of he
ganization was perfected. After some months, Mrs. Brown appointed Miss Frances McNair as Organizing Regent, and the work was continued with renewed interest. Finally, the required number of members for the organization was completed, and on November 8, 1929, a meeting was held at the home of Miss McNair and the Chapter was officially organized.
Miss McNair presided. Mrs. Barrett Jones, Regent of Ralph Humphreys Chapter, brought greetings from that Chapter. Mrs. Calvin Brown, State Regent, in a most interesting way explained the methods of organization and the objects of the D. A. R. On recommendation of the nominating committee, the following officers were elected: Regent, Miss Frances McNair; Vice-Regent, Mrs. Will Buck; Recording-Secretary, Mrs. John B. Taylor; Corresponding-Secretary, Mrs. T. D. Case; Treasurer, Mrs. W. P. Koehler; Registrar, Miss Susie Selser; Historian, Miss Lillian Battaile; Chaplain, Mrs. Cassedy Holden.
Name Origin
According to The History of the Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution 1896-1996, page 362, The Magnolia State Chapter was named for the State Flower. The “magnolia grandiflora” is a beautiful, native evergreen tree of noble proportions, growing to one hundred feet. Often seen growing wild along Mississippi highways, it is a spectacular sight with its large, creamy-white, fragrant flowers and beautiful foliage.
Several charter members of the chapter also remember that this name was chosen because Mississippi is known as “The Magnolia State”.
Makeup of Chapter
Originally, most of the members were working women who could only meet on the weekends. While that is no longer the case, a great number of our members are either working women or retired from full-time jobs.
Our chapter continues to meet the goals of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution by supporting historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
